Alcugs Server Current Project Status FAQ
Q: Does this FAQ imply all the other Alcugs projects?
No. This only applies to the Alcugs Server Project that interacts (talks) with the copyrighted, protected and untouchable Plasma client engine. This FAQ does not apply to any future Alcugs/7d7 projects that will interact (talk) with another uncopyrighted, unprotected and touchable game engine --Almlys 01:17, 30 August 2006 (CEST)
Q: So, What happened to the Alcugs server?
The current Alcugs server software has been ceased to exist, there is still activity in the Subversion repository, but there are no plans to release, or open access to the code anymore in the future --Almlys 01:17, 30 August 2006 (CEST)
Q: What happens to those that are still running Alcugs servers?
I don't know, they may end receiving a nice Cease and Desist sooner o later --Almlys 01:17, 30 August 2006 (CEST)
Q: Is there any possibility for the return of the Alcugs server
NO, No, and no, and No, perhaps, Maybe, and No. --Almlys 01:17, 30 August 2006 (CEST)
With Cyan's protected material -> Absolutely NO
With User created material (with another engine) -> Indeed (Disclaimer: If your content uses some Cyan's Canon things such as linking books you may need to ask permission to Cyan, and you will be again stuck in Cyan's Copyright prison age, so if you can avoid using such items it will be better) --Almlys 01:17, 30 August 2006 (CEST)
Q: What happens with Age Creation, the PyPRP plugin, and all the other stuff that interacts with the Plasma engine?
Personally: I have shutdown any other projects that interacted in some way with the Plasma engine until Cyan's legal department decides to answer to one of the several mails that I have sent. The PRP plugin is still open until they send a threat and/or a lawyer, then I will act according to it --Almlys 01:17, 30 August 2006 (CEST)
Q: My question is not listed here, what I can do?
Presh the edit button and add it to the list. Please attach your signature to your question. I will try to answer if I find time --Almlys 01:17, 30 August 2006 (CEST)
Q: But, Can I still use Alcugs Server to play online with a small group of friends?--Dark Falkon 19:54, 7 May 2007
Yes in secret, No in a public way. This may also depend on which country is the server hosted.--Almlys 02:06, 8 May 2007 (CEST)
Q: How can I run an Alcugs Server on Windows?--Dark Falkon 15:53, 12 May 2007
It's possible, but is not easy. Read this for more detailed information. You may need to edit the source and fix any compilation errors by hand. I wish you luck.--Almlys 21:05, 13 May 2007 (CEST)
Q: What differences are between running Alcugs on Windows, or running it on Linux?--Dark Falkon 15:53, 12 May 2007
The server has been mainly developed and tested under Linux and for Linux and compatible *NIX systems.
[Rant mode on - This may offend some winsucks lusers - You have been warned]
- The main problem in Windows, is that several stuff available on all the other real operating systems is not available, or is hidden, it lacks documentation, or it does not work in the way it should work.
- It may have issues with some firewall configurations or other apps like antivirus etc, making the server run slow, or just don't work in the way it should work. Everybody knows that all Windows based firewalls are a big piece of garbage compared with Linux iptables :)
- Also, running alcugs under windows, you have several nice features like BSOD, crashes, hangs, unexpected crashes, and a long etc.
So if you can install the server in a dedicated Linux, *BSD, Mac, Solaris, etc... do it. Don't waste your time on that other thing that nobody should be using.
[end of rant mode]

Q: What happens now that Cyan has open sourced URU? --Redsoxfan 17:36, 15 December 2008 (CET)
First, wait for the code and what license they will use. Currently Uru is still not open source until the code is not officially published in a public way for everybody in equal. When that happens, then, we can say that Alcugs will get out of the grey area, Almlys will reopen the GoE shard, and then me and everybody that wants, will work on the Cyan's server code and client code to improve it, and make it a better and stable game. For example the first thing is to port the client to Linux.
But that's not gonna happen. Physx, Bink, and Havok are not open source, they have some problems with some 3rd party libraries that them need to solve in order to release the source, or them will need to remove all that conflicting code, and the we will need to replace them with open source equivalents... and I can continue writting for hours.
First, wait for Cyan to really release the code, currently this anouncement is only vaporware 100%, when I see the code I will believe, then wonderful things will happen :-D --Almlys 20:34, 15 December 2008 (CET)
